Many, many thanks for sharing your photo exhibit entitled “Images of Mexico” with the students of Los Gatos High School.
Fifteen Spanish classes and four photography classes toured your exhibit on its opening day, May 21! All took away a greater knowledge of the culture, art, and people of Mexico. The series of 12 photographs depicting “The Day of the Dead” celebration was especially fascinating to students who had read of this tradition in their literature selections, but who had only a vague concept of how the event was celebrated.
Student activities in response to the exhibit varied with year of Spanish studied. First year students identified the location of each photograph on an outline map of Mexico’s states – a great geography lesson. Students with two or more years of Spanish described four photographs in Spanish and wrote a paragraph explaining which photograph they most liked. Oral responses indicate the Day of the Dead photo depicting a skull puffing a cigarette was the popular favorite!
The bilingual video recorded by Mr. Cardenas was an effective introduction viewed by all nineteen classes. Mr. Cardenas not only gave a succinct overview of the entire exhibit, but also personally encouraged all students to visit Mexico for a first-hand view of its splendor. In addition to these formal viewings of the exhibit on May 21, hundreds of non-Spanish students casually viewed the exhibit during the two-week display.
Again, on behalf of all these students and the Spanish and photography teachers of Los Gatos High School, thank you for bringing the culture of Mexico to us all.
